What Does That Mean?

You have the right to understand the health information that you hear from your doctor
The doctor works for you!
What Can You Do?
1.  Before going to the doctor’s office
2.  While you are at the doctor’s office
3.  After you leave the doctor’s office
Before the Visit:
Prepare questions
Write down your symptoms
Decide how you will get to your appointment and make sure you know where it is
Research
Talk with friends and family

Ask questions (avoid “White Coat Amnesia”)
Bring a friend or family member to help you understand the doctor

Take notes (or have a friend take notes)
Ask for a photocopy of any helpful information that the doctor has

Keep these results in a file, and bring them when you go to a new doctor

Get Your Information In Plain Language
What is my main problem?
“Your blood pressure is too high.”
What do I need to do?
“You need to eat less salt, and you need to exercise more.”
Why is it important for me to do this?
“If you eat healthy food and exercise, you can stay healthy and feel better.”
Tips to Manage Your Health:
Make a list of your health concerns
Bring a list of all your medicines to your doctor and pharmacist
Bring a family member or friend to your doctor visit
Ask your pharmacist for help if you have questions about your medicine
